NATURAL HISTORY
Back Forward
The Natural History exhibit consists of animal specimens in dioramas and study specimens collected as part of specific research projects.  One notable exception is the birds.  During his summer following graduation from high school, Kenneth Carlander collected specimens, many of which were ultimately mounted for exhibit in the museum.  He also documented in a local newspaper column the birds and his activities.  These activities were so important and beneficial that he was hired the next summer by Texas Parks Department to do the same thing in Palo Duro Canyon.  Consequently, he may have been the first State Ornithologist in Texas.  Dr. Carlander went on to become a world authority in biology at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa.  The remaining collection includes a limited number of mammal skins and sea shells, and a collection of bones used for comparison by archeologists and paleontologists.
