TRUNKS

trunkTake a Museum to the Classroom
Trunks loaded with touchable artifacts, photographs, books for various ages, and a Teacher’s Guide are available for the classroom.  A trained interpreter can be scheduled to come into the classroom on Tuesdays and give kids an energetic, first-hand history lesson.

Trunk rental is $25.00 per week and will be loaned out on a first-call, first-served basis.  Teachers are responsible for picking up and returning the trunks.  They can be picked up on Fridays between 4:30 and 5:00 p.m. and can be kept in the classroom for one week.  The trunks must be returned no later than the next Friday by 4:00 p.m. so the next teacher can pick it up.

Choose from any one of these trunks:

African American Trunk
Includes underground Railroad Quilt Sampler, Sounds of Slavery CD, objects representing the types of work done by slaves.  History continues into modern day stories about such people as Marian Anderson, Jackie Robinson, Thurgood Marshall, and Martin Luther King, Jr.  The trained interpreter will tell about how the artifacts were used, stories about African-American people, and asnwer questions.

Plains Bison Trunk
Includes touchable bison bones, bison fur and hides, dried bison “chips,” a bison hairball, a dried bison bladder and much more.  The trained interpreter will describe how the Plains Indians used the bison, tell about the bison’s skeleton and answer questions.

Texas Panhandle Ranching Trunk
Includes cowboy clothing adopted from the vaquero tradition.  Students will learn how clothing played an important role in the work of a cowboy and how ranching became one of the first businesses in the Panhandle.  The trained interpreter will show clothing were used, tell stories about ranches and cowboys, and answer questions.

Southern Plains Indians Trunk
Includes clothing, tools, children’s toys, animal hides, and much more.  The trained interpreter will show how the artifacts were used, stories about Plains Indians, and answer questions.
