Length: 45 – 60 minutes
Grades: 3rd – 12th

Retired Amarillo educator, Helen Neal, grew up in Oklahoma in the 1930s. Her grandmother, Katie Island Rentie (1851-1941), always had sewing projects in progress. Mrs. Neal remembers playing under the quilting frame while quilters shared news and gossip. This is how she learned much about her family’s history. She will discuss the part quilting played during the time of slavery in America from 1641 through 1865.
