PPHM opened the newly renovated Mary E. Bivins Gallery hosting American Indian artifacts. Items comprise beaded clothing, silver jewelry, rugs and weavings, paintings, Southwestern pottery, and baskets from throughout Western North America.
The American Indian (Ethnology) collection of the museum includes historic Indian artifacts from the Southern Plains—Comanche, Kiowa, Southern Cheyenne, and Arapaho—and related areas of the Southwest. Notable artifacts include a bonnet and lance from Quanah Parker; a bonnet, shield, and lance from White Eagle (Eschiti); a traditional dance outfit from Oscar Yellow Wolf; and a feathered headdress from Big Bow.
The collection also contains numerous pottery pieces by Maria Martinez, Julian Martinez, Popovi Da, and Santana Martinez. Included are red- and buff-colored vessels in addition to the typical black ware for which Maria Martinez is most noted.
The basket collection contains numerous Hopi plaques, as well as baskets from Eastern Woodland (Great Lakes) Indians along with Northwest Coast and Western tribes such as Tlingit, Pomo, Chitimacha, and Apache.
Recent acquisitions have added modern Kachinas, making this collection well-represented with older and newer examples.
Beaded clothing includes examples from Great Lakes tribes, but also includes spectacular Kiowa and Comanche beaded buckskin shirts, leggings, moccasins, and dresses. |
