Texas Art

A vast collection for a big state

Our Texas Gallery takes the larger themes of Southwestern Art and focuses it on the state most associated with the American West. With competing Spanish, English, and native cultures—not to mention a history and geography as colorful as any state in the Union—Texas regionalism is an artistic category unto itself.

Our historic Texas collection is the most comprehensive in the state. In fact, our museum boasts the only permanent gallery in Texas devoted to Texas art. Lone Star regionalism is ably represented by artists such as Kathleen Blackshear, Jerry Bywaters, Otis Dozier, Russell Vernon Hunter, Grace Spaulding John, William Lester, Florence McClung, Octavio Medellin and Everett Spruce. Their works complement the work of early Texas artists like Jose Arpa, Hermann Lungkwitz, Richard Petri, Elisabet Ney, S. Seymour Thomas, Edward G. Eisenlohr and Robert and Julian Onderdonk.

Not to be missed are our sub-categories of Texas art, with gallery space dedicated to Women Artists of Texas and Prairie Printmakers.
