In Classroom Experiences

Each classroom experience brings the museum straight to you. Your children will have the opportunity to learn a little about history with hands-on experiences and then test their knowledge with fun activities. HAVE ART, WILL TRAVEL is another option for in-classroom experiences, along with Trunks.

TRUNK RENTALS

Grades K-12

Don't have time to prepare and present your own trunk program? By booking a Trunk for a Day, you are bringing history into your classroom. You specify the trunk of your choice. We will bring the trunk to your classroom, present a 45-60 minute program to your students, and transport the trunk back to the museum.

Cost is $25 for a teacher-led program and four school day (Monday– Thursday) rental, or book an interpreter for a one day rental for the same cost (plus mileage if outside Amarillo/Canyon ISD) To reserve a date and time for your class, email education@pphm.wtamu.edu.

Bison on the Plains

An Indian’s life on the plains was not one of luxury. The Plains Indians were nomadic and had to carry all of their worldly possessions with them. This trunk program will show the students all about the MVPs of the southern plains Indian tribes using artifacts that helped them survive the day to day life.

Panhandle Heritage Trunk

Scholars believe that there are over 3,800 cultures in the world, although in reality we know that number is far higher. This trunk program will discuss the different cultures of the Texas Panhandle through artifacts. Each artifact will tell you the story of the culture that used it and what obstacles they had to overcome to survive.

Discovering Dinos

Did you know the Texas Panhandle was once a place where dino’s roamed? Dino’s were the giants of our land but are now a thing of our past. In this trunk program students will have the opportunity to have hands-on experiences using artifacts that relate back to our Texas Panhandle history. This trunk will be a ROOOAARRRING good time for your classroom.

Dusty Old Dust

1930-1939 was a prominent time in the Texas Panhandle’s history. The Great Depression, WWII and the Dust Bowl were events that shaped this area to be what it is today. From growing food for the war effort to walking miles in a dust storm this era was not for the weak. With the help of Panhandle PBS we are able to show artifacts from this time period students will learn about what obstacles people had to endure as well as how their day to day lives change all because of dust.

Southern Plains Indian Trunk

Teachers can utilize touchable artifacts including clothing, tools, children’s toys, animal hides, and much more to illustrate Plains Indian life. A trained interpreter is available to show how the artifacts were used, tell stories about Plains Indians, and answer questions.

Texas Panhandle Cowboy/Vaquero Trunk

Students will learn how each article of clothing played an important role in the work of a cowboy and how ranching became one of the first businesses in the Texas Panhandle. Loaded with touchable artifacts, including cowboy clothing adopted from the vaquero tradition, this trunk includes photographs, books for various ages, and a teacher's guide. A trained interpreter can show how the clothing was used, tell stories about ranches and cowboys, and answer questions.

World War II Trunk

This trunk is a result of a collaboration between KACV-TV, Region 16, and PPHM and is full of touchable artifacts including an Army and Navy uniform, propaganda, communications equipment, and much more. A trained interpreter can show how the propaganda was used, tell stories about heroism during the war, and answer questions.

BONZ AND THINGZ

Using animal skulls, photographs of indigenous animals, and activities, students have the opportunity to learn about the natural lifestyles of Texas Panhandle mammals. The students will examine the teeth and facial features of the mammal to determine if they are predator or prey. Students will also be provided with a scientific datasheet to identify their findings.
